#News #Awards | Ice Prince wins ‘Best International Act: Africa’ at 2013 BET Awards & Google Trends agrees!

So, Nigerian pop star Ice Prince Zamani won the award for Best International Act: Africa at the BET Awards 2013. The news was announced on the afternoon prior to the award show in Los Angeles on June 30. Since this category was created in 2011, Nigeria has been leading the list of nominees, being the only country with more than one nominee each year. Nigeria also won each time. In 2011, both Tuface Idibia and D'Banj were nominated and won. Last year, Ice Prince received his first nomination alongside fellow countryman Wizkid. Ice Prince did not win, but Wizkid took the trophy home with Ghanaian Sarkodie, who was the other winner. This year, Nigeria was once again represented by 2 nominees  including Tuface Idibia and Ice Prince. However this time, there was only 1 winner, and once again, the trophy went to Nigeria as Ice Prince Zamani becomes the fourth Nigerian artist to win the award for Best International Act: Africa at the BET Awards.

Personally, I was rooting for Toya Delazy because not only she is a talented artist, but she was repping for the ladies. However, the judges saw a lot in Ice Prince and crowned him Best International Act: Africa. Ice Prince definitely rocks, he deserves that recognition and Google Trends seems to concur. Google Trends is an online search tool that allows users to compare the volume of searches between two or more terms. This web facility gives an insight into the popularity of a keyword  on the world's number one search engine that Google is. This is definitely helpful information when you are trying to figure out how prominent someone is online. So, I queried up different keywords to figure out how our BET awards nominees were doing online and here is the result!

According to Google Trends (see graph below), these past 12 months, Ice Prince has been the most queried name out of all the 2013 Best International Act: Africa nominees, with an average search interest of 60. Toya Delazy comes behind with an index of 20, then 2face Idibia with 19, R2bees with 15 and Radio & Weasel with 6. There was no specific trends for Donald probably because the name is very common and when searching with the keywords "donald south african singer" and "donald moatshe", there was not enough search volume to show graphs.

Also, results showed that Ice Prince is the only artist who is trending heavily  in a region other than the country of origin. In fact, Google Trends was able to locate an important volume of search queries about Ice Prince in Ghana (48). Google Trends did not find any out-of-country-of-origin trend for key terms like "Toya Delazy", "Tuface Idibia", "2face Idibia", "2face" or even "Tuface". In other words, Google Trends suggests that the other artists are only very popular in their home countries.

Not sure if the BET judges used the Google Trends tool to choose the winner, but it sure looks like Ice Prince Zamani represents Africa the best. So again...CONGRATULATIONS ICE PRINCE ZAMANI!!!!
